A Quick Guide To Making A Will

by | Oct 4, 2022 | News

Creating a will ensures that all of your property, finances, investments and any owned property goes to the people you care about after you pass. If you do not have a will, your assets may end up in the hands of the wrong people.

If you do not have a will, your spouse and children will inherit all of your assets. If you have no spouse and no children, other family members may inherit your estate instead.

Writing a will may seem daunting, but it is an important part of preparing for your future and the future of your family.

The first step is to assess your estate and work out what you have to leave behind. Have property valued, compile a total of any savings you have and take a look at any insurance or pension pay-outs you are entitled to.

You should also consider any of your belongings that you wish to leave to others, including personal items, jewellery or furniture.

Any debts you have outstanding will not be passed onto your family, however, the outstanding balances will be taken from your estate prior to it being divided between the people you write into your will.

Once you have collated all the necessary information, you can then make the decision of what goes to who. Choose an executor as well, who will take charge of collecting and distributing your estate once you die.

When it comes to writing up your will, you can choose from several options such as professional will writers, lawyers and solicitors, banks or charities. You can also choose to write your own will, however, you must ensure it is valid as it is a legal document.

Once all this has been completed, you can sign your will. This does not finalise your will, it can still be updated as many times as necessary. In some cases, creating an entirely new will and cancelling the previously made one is the best option.
