January is a lot of things – a time to give up alcohol, a month to try veganism, a chance to lose the pounds, or the beginning of a single life. This is the case for many people, with January being the most popular month of the year to apply for divorce.
Although it is too early to tell what the figures will be like for this January, the first Monday is typically the busiest for divorce lawyers, as they deal with more enquiries about legal separation than any other day of the year.
So why is this the case? It is thought the intensity of Christmas is the final straw for many unhappy couples, as it forces people to spend more time together.
The festive season also puts lots of financial strain on families, and monetary issues can be enough to tear a relationship apart.
A lot of married couples that would have applied to separate in November or December might also choose to stay together over Christmas for the sake of their children. Not wanting to cause disruption to festivities for their kids, many tend to ride the holiday out and file after it is over.
Another reason is that the new year presents an opportunity for change, with people who are in failing relationships finally taking the plunge and leaving their spouse.
Vicky Townsend, chief executive of the National Association of Divorce Professionals, told the New York Times: “New Year’s resolutions – it’s a new year, new you, new start.”
She added: “The holidays are over, and I’m not going into this year as miserable as I was last year.”
